compensation

My friend Andrea recently sent me an email remarking on the fact that Taiwan looks incredibly colorful, particularly in comparison to Poland, where she is living this year. So I thought I'd post this black and white picture of a shrine I saw at Ximending a couple of weeks ago, just to kind of even the score. Does it look like Poland now?

  1. I don't know about Poland, but it sure looks like Paris. All we see are shades of grey! Stupid winter weather. Also the decorations remind me of the Chinese bazaars just down the street from our apartment, and the lanterns look a lot like those that are hanging over all the sections of the city that were on the New Year's parade route. Happy New Year!!

  2. Oh yeah, just like Poland.

Actually, one of the striking aspects of this photo is the "clutter" (also the original photos you sent that prompted my comment). I don't think this is a matter of national difference, however. Rather, Warsaw is a city with broad streets and lots of space, even in its churches, which are often rebuilt in a manner that emphasizes the loss of art and fundamentals of ritual. I'll be in touch with Marian shrines in the springtime, and then we can talk color on the same wavelength! (hahaahhaah)
